Khaled Mashal leads the Hamas political department, although he is also believed to be involved in the group's terror operations. He currently operates from Damascus, Syria.
Israeli agents botched an assassination attempt on Mashal in Jordan in 1997, straining Israeli-Jordanian relations and eventually forcing Israel to release Hamas leader Sheikh Yassin in exchange for the captured Mossad hit team.
Overall, Mashal is considered a hardliner and a vocal critic of the Palestinian Authority, whose stance against Israel is too soft in his view.
