King Abdullah II bin al Hussein is the leader of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. He came to power in February 1999, after his father, the late King Hussein, passed away.

 

Abdullah was born in Amman on January 30, 1962. He attended military schools in England and in the United States, and later held various posts in the Jordanian Armed Forces. In 1994, he was appointed as commander of the country's Special Forces.

 

Abdullah, who speaks flawless English, also studied at Georgetown University's School of Foreign Service and earned his master's degree there.

 

He is considered a moderate leader and has helped make Jordan one of the region's most progressive countries.

 

The King and his wife, Queen Rania, have one son and two daughters.
