Mohammed Dahlan is a senior member of the Fatah movement and a powerful Palestinian security figure, particularly in the Gaza Strip.
He is also a senior security advisor to Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas in 2005.
Dahlan was born in 1961 in the Gaza town of Khan Younis. He was among the founders of the Fatah Youth Association, established in 1981. Throughout the 1980s he was repeatedly arrested by Israel and eventually deported to Jordan, but returned to the Gaza Strip in 1988.
Yasser Arafat appointed Dahlan to the post of preventive security chief in the Strip, but he resigned in 2002. He was appointed minister in charge of security by former Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas, but dismissed a few months later, after Abbas lost power.
Dahlan has been a regular participant in security meetings with Israeli officials and also took part in peace talks with Israel.
Dahlan has a B.A. in Business Administration from the Islamic University of Gaza. He is married with three children.
