Hezbollah (“Party of God” in Arabic) is a radical Islamic Shiite terrorist organization formed in Lebanon in 1982. The group is intimately connected to the Iranian regime and inspired by the Iranian revolution.

Although ostensibly committed to liberating Lebanese territory from Israeli occupation, the group aims to eliminate Israel and also advocates the establishment of an Islamic regime in Lebanon.

Hezbollah, led by General Secretary Hassan Nasrallah, is largely funded and armed by Iran, but also enjoys Syrian political and logistical support.

Hezbollah terrorists have attacked both Israeli and American targets over the years. They have also kidnapped westerners in Beirut during the 1980s and bombed Jewish targets in Argentina, killing scores.

The group attempts to cast itself as a legitimate Lebanese political party and has established an extensive social services network. Nonetheless, it was designated as a terrorist organization by several countries, including the U.S. and Canada.

The group continued to clash with Israeli forces after the IDF’s withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000, and also boasts a global network of sympathizers and operatives.

Currently, three Hezbollah members are on the FBI’s list of 22 most wanted terrorists.
