Country optimistic about summit

Majority trusts Abbas; supports release of Palestinian prisoners

SHARM EL-SHEIKH – The public is optimistic regarding Tuesday’s summit in Sharm el-Sheikh, Yedioth Ahronoth reports.

 

According to a survey conducted by the Dahaf Institute, 48 percent of the public is “fairly optimistic” regarding the possibility of an improved security situation following the Sharm summit and 13% is “very optimistic," as opposed to 23% of the public that is “fairly pessimistic” and 14% that is “very pessimistic”.

 

The survey shows that 24% believe Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas is sincere in his intent to stop terror, 36% said they “tend to believe” him, 10% said they “tend not to believe” him, and 27% said they “do not believe” him.

 

Regarding the release of Palestinian prisoners, the survey showed 46% would support the release of prisoners who “have no blood on their hands” and 21% said they would support the release of murderers, but only if they are old or sick.

 

However, 31% said no prisoners should be released.

 

The survey also showed 55% of Israelis believe a referendum on the Gaza disengagement should be held, while 43% believe it is unnecessary.
