Druze teen responsible for clashes

Spread rumors regarding nude photos as act of revenge; residents blame police for clashes

A Druze teen is responsible for the clashes that erupted between Christians and Druze in the lower Galilee town of Kfar Mrar this past weekend.

 

A local 16-year-old Druze admitted to the police he had fabricated the existence of the photos. During his questioning, the Druze teen said he had spread the rumor as an act of vengeance against someone who had cursed the Druze on the Internet.

 

The rumors surrounding the photos triggered fierce fighting between Druze and Christian Kfar Mrar residents, and several Christian-owned cars and shops were burned down.

 

Eight people were wounded in the clashes. Many Christians fled their homes over the weekend for fear of Druze violence, and

 

The photos were never posted on the Internet, police sources say.

 

The clashes resumed Sunday night after rumors had spread that Christians from nearby towns were planning to arrive in Mrar to confront the Druze.

 

Following three hours of fighting, police forces managed to disperse the crowds.

 

A local Christian resident told Ynet the police did not do its job of defending the citizens.

 

“The destruction of the homes and church, and above all the fleeing of Christian residents from Mar - this cannot be regarded as a success; this is a failure” he said.
