Survey gives Fatah election win

About 20 percent of respondents say they plan to vote for Hamas in July elections

The ruling Fatah movement is set to win elections for the Palestinian Legislative Council scheduled for July, a new survey shows.

About 43 percent of respondents said they would vote for the Fatah, while 21 percent said they would support the Hamas, according to the poll, comprised of 944 respondents and taken over the weekend.

Meanwhile, 4 percent of respondents said they would vote for the Popular Front, while the Islamic Jihad was picked by only 3 percent.

The results are surprising in light of local council elections held in Gaza last month, in which the Hamas scored an impressive victory.

Calls to fire Prime Minister Qureia

Earlier Tuesday, Legislative Council members forced Prime Minister Ahmed Qureia to withdraw his proposed list of new government ministers, after realizing there is no way the proposed Cabinet would receive the majority's backing.

Qureia announced the new government would be presented Wednesday, and would apparently be comprised of figures who are currently not part of the Legislative Council.

Some members of Fatah demanded that Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas dismiss Qureia, with the favored replacement being Palestinian Finance Minister Salam Fayyad.
