Drug case takes unexpected twist
Students, parents, attempt to disrupt police investigation; father hides son’s drugs in underwear
HOD HASHARON - A drug investigation involving 70 high school students took an unexpected twist, after both students and parents collaborated in an effort to thwart police efforts.
The investigation, which was launched several months ago, was intensified after police found a cell phone containing lists of drug users and suppliers at a local park. The phone also contained photographs of students using drugs.
Once enough evidence was collected, the students were called in for questioning, where many of them admitted to the charges and were released to house arrest.
School guard also a suspect
However, some students later took steps to thwart the investigation, by warning their friends about police intentions. Moreover, says police officer Rafi Vaaknin, some parents assisted their children in disrupting police efforts.
“In one case, we arrived to search the home of a student whose father was a lawyer,” Vaaknin says. “The father went into the house before us, which raised our suspicions. We searched him and discovered he was hiding his son’s drugs in his underwear.”
Parents who attempted to thwart police efforts are facing an investigation as well, he says.
Meanwhile, police were suspecting that a guard at one of the local schools was also involved in supplying drugs to students. The guard allegedly met students at his home, where they held drug parties.
The 30-year-old Hod Hasharon resident confessed to smoking drugs with students, but said they were the ones who supplied them.
