Jewish Agency

None

The Jewish Agency ("Hasochnut" in Hebrew) strives to rescue Jews in distress and danger and to support all Jews who choose to make their home in Israel. It is involved in Jewish immigration to Israel, Jewish-Zionist education and strengthening the partnership between the global Jewish community and Israel.

The Jewish Agency was established by the World Zionist Organization on August 11, 1929 in accordance with the stipulation in the League of Nations Mandate for Palestine (1922). The goal of the Mandate was to eventually transfer authority over territories taken from countries defeated in World War I to the local population.

The Jewish Agency served as the de facto government before the state of Israel was created. Thus it was recognized as the official representative of the Jewish community and world Jewry by the League of Nations, the British Mandate government in Palestine and foreign governments.
