Ehud Olmert (1945- ) is a senior member of the Likud party and served as Mayor of Jerusalem from 1993-2003.

 

Olmert is considered a moderate in the Likud ranks and a close associate of Prime Minister Ariel Sharon.

 

In February 2003, Sharon appointed Olmert as Minister of Industry and trade and Deputy Prime Minister.

 

Born in Binyamina in 1945, Olmert served as an IDF combat infantry officer and a military correspondent. A lawyer by profession, he has degrees in psychology, philosophy and law from the Hebrew University.

 

He was first elected to the Knesset in 1973, but resigned in 1998 after having served on a wide variety of committees. After resigning as mayor, Olmert was again elected to the Knesset in 2003.

 

Olmert is married with four children.
