In 2003, Uri Lupolianski became the first Orthodox Jew to become mayor of Jerusalem. Prior to this, he served on the Jerusalem City Council since 1989.
Born in Haifa in 1951, Lupolianski served in the Israel Defense Forces and was a teacher in a Jerusalem religious school.
In 1976, he established the Yad Sarah organization, in memory of his grandmother who perished in the Holocaust, which lends medical equipment and provides volunteers throughout the country.
Lupolianski is married with 12 children and six grandchildren.
