Appel won't be indicted

Land developer who allegedly offered Prime Minister Sharon hundreds of thousands of dollars to help him develop a Greek island project will not be indicted

TEL AVIV - Businessman David Appel will not be indicted for allegedly bribing Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Israel’s chief prosecutor said on Thursday, ending one of the biggest scandals related to the Israeli leader.

Appel was accused last year of offering hundreds of thousands of dollars to Sharon and his son Gilad, whom he hired in the 1990’s as an adviser on a Greek Island development project that eventually flopped.

The prime minister has denied any wrongdoing.

Attorney General Menachem Mazuz had already acquitted Sharon of all involvement in the affair and had closed the case, dubbed the “Greek Island Affair”, for lack of evidence as well.

Sharon, foreign minister at the time, had been accused of trying to help win Greek government approval for the venture.

Appel will also not be indicted for allegedly bribing Deputy Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and a former Knesset member.
