'Israel fails to deliver'

Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas says Prime Minister Sharon has failed to deliver on pledges made during Sharm el-Sheikh summit

GAZA - Israel has failed to meet pledges made by Prime Minister Ariel Sharon at the Sharm el-Sheikh summit, Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas charged during a talk with journalists in Gaza on Monday.

Abbas told reporters he intends to ask Sharon one question during their upcoming meeting: Why aren't you implementing the Sharm understandings?

The Palestinian leader is also scheduled to meet with terror group representatives Tuesday evenings to discuss the maintenance of the current lull in violence. During the session, Abbas is expected to ask terrorists to maintain the calm during the IDF's upcoming pullout from the Gaza Strip.

Abbas is also scheduled to meet with senior Palestinian security officials in Gaza.

Abbas hoping for American pressure on Israel

During Monday's briefing, Abbas said he hopes his upcoming visit to the United States would be held in a positive atmosphere. He also expressed his hope that the Israeli withdrawal would be accompanied by an end to all settlement activity.

"We'll ask the Americans to back up their talk against the settlements with actions on the ground," he said.

The Palestinian leader said Tuesday will mark 100 days since he came to power, and added he hopes to adopt more measures soon in a bid to provide security for the Palestinians.

Regarding the new senior security officials appointed recently, Abbas said it is natural for one generation to give way for the next.

"The new officers will continue the tradition of their predecessors," he said.
