Report recommends modified selection process

Mazuz says 'No' to cronyism

Attorney general wants ministers to refrain from involvement in government appointments

TEL AVIV - Attorney General Menachem Mazuz and Civil Service Commissioner Shmuel Hollander have accepted the recommendations of a committee tasked with examining cronyism at government offices.

Human resources officials at the various government offices are subject to constant pressure by politicians seeking to influence appointments, the report found.

The committee recommended that ministers be banned from interfering in any way with appointments at their offices.

The committee was set up after allegations of wrongdoing and improper appointments surfaced at the Environment Ministry under then-minister Tzachi Hanegbi.

Report recommends modified selection process

Committee members, which included representatives from the Treasury, Justice Ministry, and Public Service Commission, examined the matter after Hanegbi's appointments led to a police investigation.

Among its findings, the committee discovered numerous loopholes, including an exemption from issuing a tender for junior positions.

The report said actions must be taken quickly to ameliorate the situation, and recommended several measures to that effect, including a modified selection process and increased monitoring of appointments by a special unit.
