Mofaz, rabbi meet to discuss pullout
Defense Minster updates distinguished Lithuanian-Orthodox Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv on disengagement preparations; right-wing activists plan anti-pullout activities for Independence Day
Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz met Thursday with prominent Lithuanian-Orthodox Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv to discuss the scheduled disengagement.
During the half-hour meeting the two discussed different aspects of the disengagement, and Mofaz updated the rabbi, who opposes the disengagement, on the defense establishment’s preparations for the planned pullout.
Mofaz and Elyashiv stressed the importance of maintaining national unity during this sensitive time, and Mofaz said he would continue to update the rabbi on the ongoing developments.
The two are scheduled to meet again soon.
Also Thursday, non-parliamentary right-wing organizations met in the West Bank settlement of Kedumim to coordinate anti-disengagement efforts.
Meanwhile, Yesha Council heads are drawing encouragement from the anti-disengagement activities held over the Pesach holiday; thousands of right-wing activists are expected to gather in Gush Katif during the Independence Day holiday to tour settlements they may be asked to return to in the summer in a bid to foil the disengagement.
Moreover, right-wing rabbis and Knesset members are expected to take part in an Independence Day anti-disengagement rally in Gush Katif.
