Sister of Hizbullah leader fired
Kais Obeid at top of Israel's most wanted list; authorities claim his sister Muna, a teacher with 12 years experience, supports him financially
Muna Obeid worked for 12 years as teacher and administrator and has an M.A. degree in early childhood education from Bar Ilan University.
She is also an Israeli citizen and the sister of Kais Obeid, a senior Hizbullah member in the territories.
For the past four years Obeid has been suspended from work due to her alleged support of her brother's terrorist activities. This week, she was finally fired.
Obeid, 35,received a termination letter from the Ministry of Education, reading (in part) "due to your brother's underground activity, and your financial support of him, the general manager feels it is necessary to terminate your work as a teacher, as it is inappropriate for you to work as a state employee and teacher.”
Obeid told Ynet "Four years ago the Shin Bet questioned me about Kais. They took me in for security questioning, and it turns out the education ministry is allowed to suspend workers involved in security cases, until the conclusion of the case."
What about the Amir family?
She denied having any connection to terrorist groups, but said it was "interesting" that members of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin's assassin Yigal Amir's family have not undergone similar experiences.
"It seems the law is a bit different for Arabs and Jews," Obeid said. "We have no human rights."
She said she believes she is being pursued in order to punish her brother.
"I don't understand," Obeid said. "If they have 'proof' I am involved (in illegal activity), why don't they charge me?"
She also denied her investigation is grounds for dismissal. "Who's not questioned, nowadays. Even Sharon is questioned," she said.
Hasn't seen Kais
Obeid said she hasn't spoken to her brother in more than four years.
"I haven't heard from him or spoken to him since I was released from detention," she said. "It hurts me to the very core."
Education Ministry officals said Muna Obeid was granted a hearing with Director General Ronit Tirosh on Wednesday in light of new information she is supporting her brother's underground activities.
Security officials said the issue will become clear in the coming days, when Obeids claims would be heard.
"Kais Obeid has long since been active on behalf of the Hizbullah terror organization, and has worked against the security of Israel and her residents," one fficial said.
The officials added that anyone involved in supporting terrorism cannot be a state employee in any realm, particularly not education.
