TEL AVIV - Security around the home of IDF Chief of Staff Dan Halutz was boosted after he received a threat letter warning him against backing the upcoming Gaza Strip and northern West Bank pullout.
“You are following the prime minister’s way…if your family is important to you, avoid doing so,” the letter read.
Police have launched an investigation into the matter and have also initiated both overt and covert action around his northern Tel Aviv home, police sources told Ynet Tuesday. Police patrols around the home were already boosted several months ago after derogatory slogans were spray-painted by unknown vandals the day Halutz assumed his post.
No suspects have been arrested in connection with the letter, but IDF officials told Ynet the person behind the threats is likely a civilian. The sources said this was the first letter of its kind to be addressed to the army chief.
According to IDF estimates, more threat letters are expected as the disengagement date approaches.
The letter was received at the army chief’s office Monday afternoon, but an official complaint was only filed Monday evening. Police officials were upset at the delay and said it hampered the investigation.
