Israel captures soccer gold

Men’s soccer team beats U.S. 2:0 to take first place; Israeli hoopsters follow suit with 89:67 victory over France

TEL AVIV -  After the Israeli women took first place in the Maccabiah’s soccer tournament, the men followed suit Wednesday with a 2:0 victory over the U.S.

Itay Shechter and Yuval Shfungin scored for coach Zeev Zeltzer’s national youth squad, which represented Israel throughout the tournament.

“The tournament was played at a high level,” Zeltzer said following the match. “It was nice to see many quality athletes on the field, and it gave us a chance to see the team that will represent Israel in the European Championships.”

Mexico claimed the Bronze medal without having to face the Brazilian squad, which was suspended from the tournament by the Maccabiah’s disciplinary committee after its players physically assaulted a referee during the semi-final match against Israel.

Israel’s men’s basketball team won the gold after an 89:67 romp of the French squad.

Assaf Dotan poured in 21 points and Elad Inbar added 13 of his own for the champs.

Guy Pnini, who was named tournament MVP, scored 12 for Israel.
