'We'll meet them in Auschwitz uniforms'

Residents of Gaza settlement of Elei Sinai are planning on wearing Auschwitz prisoner uniforms to greet security forces on day of disengagement

ELEI SINAI - Residents of the Gaza settlement of Elei Sinai are planning on wearing Auschwitz prisoner uniforms to greet security forces on day of the disengagement, Israel Radio said today.

Youth leader Zuri Ganish showed an Israeli Radio correspondent the uniform, on which a yellow Star of David has been sewn, with the worde “Jude.”

Ganish said a group of residents from the settlement will wear the uniforms when opening their doors to IDF soldiers who will arrive to evacuate them from their homes. Ganish said he then decided to shelve the idea, after concluding that wearing the uniform would upset many people.

However, there are residents who are still planning on going ahead with the idea, such as Yitzhak Gabai, who says that “there is no difference between the treatment meted out to Elai Sinai residents by the Israeli government and the way Jews were treated by the Nazi regime in the 1940s.”

This is not the first time that comparisons have been made in the right between the disengagement and the Holocaust. Last week, Knesset Member Zvi Hendel (National Union) provoked a storm of controversy when he compared the behavior of police at Kfar Maimon to the Nazis.

“Maybe we killed Eichmann for no reason, because he was also just following orders,” said Hendel.

The Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum said Hendel’s comments border on Holocaust denial.
