IDF pullout from Philadelphi set

Defense Ministry's political-military office reaches agreement with Cairo over 750 Egyptian security personnel, paving way for withdrawal from Philadelphi Route

Is Israel leaving the Philadelphi Route? On Monday, the Foreign Ministry worked out a deal with the Egyptians, whereby they station 750 troops along the border between the two countries.

Maj. Gen. (res.) Amos Gilad represented the Ministry's political-military office in talks with the Egyptians about their placing 750 troops along 14 kilometers of borderland, including the Philadelphi Route.

The specific protocols for the forces will be signed by colonels from both sides.

Security sources said that the deal is not a diplomatic one, and therefore not a renegotiation of the 1979 peace treaty.

Security experts, including Defense Minister Shaul Mofaz, have said that the IDF must leave the Philadelphi Route as part of disengagement.

Once the Egyptian security personnel take their positions, it is expected that the IDF will wihdraw.
