IDF kills 2 Palestinians in Nablus

Two gunmen killed during shootout with IDF soldiers operating in the West Bank town of Nablus. Palestinians say two al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades members shot to death; army says soldier lightly hurt

Palestinian gunmen and IDF soldiers exchanged fire early Friday during an operation to arrest terror suspects in the Balata refugee camp, in the West Bank town of Nablus.

Palestinian sources said two gunmen were killed in the shootout and several others were wounded. The IDF reported one soldier sustained light shrapnel injuries and was treated at the scene, as the operation continued.

The army said gunmen opened fire at troops, who returned fire and hit several Palestinians.

Overall, the army detained 11 terror suspects in the Nablus area and another 6 wanted terror suspects elsewhere in the West Bank.

According to the Palestinians, the two men shot to death were key members of the Fatah's al-Aqsa Brigades, Ala Tirawi and Muhammad al-Jarmi. One of the Palestinians hurt in the shooting, Muhammad Qatawi, is reportedly in grave condition after suffering chest wounds.

In recent days, the IDF operated in the Balata refugee camp on several occasions, following a long period of quiet in Nablus.

The killing of the two Palestinians comes a day after the commander of the al-Aqsa Brigades in Jenin, Zacharia Zubeidi, announced the group was no longer committed to maintaining the lull in violence.

Zubeidi also vowed to avenge the killing of a senior group member, killed by the IDF recently.

Meanwhile, Palestinian officials expressed their concern over the prospect of renewed violence in the West Bank in the event Israel continues to arrest wanted terror suspects in the region.
