Warming the insides for winter
Winter may have taken a temporary hiatus in Israel. But it is sure to return, and with it will come the need for some "heartwarming" drinks
This winter there are three new alcoholic drinks in Israel.
A single malt Scotch whisky (Scotch whiskies are traditionally spelled without an "e", where as American and Irish brands are usually referred to as whiskey) manufactured in the oldest distillery on the Island of Islay, off the west coast of Scotland.
The distillery was established in 1779 and prides itself on being one of the only distilleries to conduct the entire whisky-making process on the island. The scotch is made from water from the Laggan River.
After being distilled, the scotch is aged in pine casks, some 30 percent of which have been used to age sherry.
I tasted Bowmore Legend (40 percent alcohol, NIS 380, or USD 80). It has a clear golden color, light-to-medium body and even flavor and an easy, smooth finish. In addition to the Legend label, the company is also importing Bowmore 12, Bowmore Mariner, Bowmore Darkest and Bowmore dawn.
"Scapa" 14 is produced in the northernmost region of Scotland, the Island of Orkney. The distillery dates to 1885 and uses clear spring water.
It is aged in bourbon casks near the sea, and the resultant salty water. Retail price: NIS 590 (USD 125)
Wyborowa
This quality Polish vodka has been produced since 1823 but was recently re-invigorated. It underwent significant change over the years as the company, which started out as a government asset under the communist government, then privatized, and in 2003 it was bought by the Farno Rica drink giant.
Wyborowa has a clear, refreshing nose, full body, balanced taste and a final kick that comes from 100 percent rye. It has two labels in Israel – one costing about NIS 60, or USD 13 (great value for money). The second, known as Wyborowa Single Estate Super Premium, is available to retailers at NIS 290 (USD 61)
