Evacuees to get protection; kibbutzniks irate

Disengagement Authority Head Yonatan Bassi told Sunday the evacuees staying at the Kibbutz Karmiya cara-villa (luxury mobile-home) site that structures strong enough to withstand the impact of a Qassam rocket will be built adjacent to their homes.
The decision follows Friday’s Qassam attack on the site, during which a baby and two men were injured.
The decision stirred ire among Kibbutz Karmiya members, whose homes will not be shielded.
“Is our blood cheaper than the evacuees’ blood?” a kibbutznik asked.
'We will turn to the High Court'
Relations between the kibbutz members and the evacuees have been tense of late after the sides blamed each other of conceited and inappropriate behavior.
“We praise the government’s willingness to protect the neighborhood, but the decision to build security rooms solely for the residents of the cara-villa site while completely disregarding the permanent resident of the kibbutz borders on stupidity,” Kibbutz Movement Secretary Gavri Bargil said.
“Will the Qassam rockets discriminate between the unprotected kibbutz homes and the security rooms? I guess the kibbutzniks’ blood is cheaper than that of the neighborhood (cara-villa site) residents.
“Should the government’s decision not be amended, we will turn to the High Court in the coming days and perhaps hold demonstrations.”
Evacuee Yossi Dayan, the former secretary of the Nisanit settlement in Gaza, said he estimates that between will leave the cara-villa site.
It was also agreed that the evacuees will move to an Ashkelon Beach Regional Council guesthouse until a solution is found for those preferring to move to the city permanently.
