Duke University to increase Jewish programs

USD 2 million donation to support Jewish programming at presigious North Carolina unviersity

A USD 2 million donation by the founders of the Sci-Fi Channel will support Jewish life programs at Duke University, President Richard H. Brodhead said Monday.

Duke's Board of Trustee's voted Friday to name the university's Hillel, a national student organization that supports Jewish life, culture and programming on campus, after the donors, Mitchell Rubenstein and his wife, Laurie Silvers. It will be called the Rubenstein-Silvers Hillel at Duke University.

The donation will "help to assure that Jewish student life at Duke will continue to flourish through cultural and educational programming, which will enrich the experience of all of our students," Brodhead said.

Rubenstein and Silvers have a child who is a junior at Duke and are the founders of the Sci-Fi Channel, which they sold to USA Network. The university declined to name the student.

"Laurie and I are particularly glad to make this gift to a university that values a range of social and cultural experiences," Rubenstein said. "Duke's leadership and its students have demonstrated their interest and strong commitment to the Jewish community."
