Israelis love their bread and butter

The group said Israelis eat on average 134 kilograms of bread and grains a year, ranking 7th in yearly bread and cereal consumption in the western world. Germany and France rank first.
A study conducted by CIA showed that 50 percent of bread bought in Israel is produced by the three leading baking giants, Angel, Berman and Davidovitch.
Some 40 percent of bread sold in Israel falls under price quotas set by the government. The average price set by the State for a loaf of bread over the last few years has been NIS 4 (USD 0.9). All other breads are sold as "special breads" and their prices are not supervised by the state.
Special breads popular among Israelis
The most popular of special breads is low calorie bread, which makes up to 50 percent of sales.
CIA found that special breads, like grain bread, wholemeal and rye bread, have become popular among Israeli consumers over the last few years.
The annual sales of special breads make up to NIS 10 million ( USD 2.173 million).
More so, not all bread that is bake is sold. Israeli bakeries dispose of 2,000 of bread every month - 4 million loafs a month, including special breads.
Unsold bread are cheaply sold for farmers and end up on the palate of calves and other offsprings.
