Jaw dislocated following yawn

Woman from northern town of Nahariya rushed to hospital after simple yawn leads to jaw dislocation

Yawning is a natural activity exercised by human beings several times a day, especially when they feel tired. But for a 28-year-old woman from the northern town of Nahariya, the yawn ended in an unpleasant incident in which her jaw was dislocated and she was hospitalized at the Nahariya hospital's otolaryngology unit.

The young woman was rushed to the emergency room, and doctors were astounded to see her mouth wide open. After a short inquiry with the people accompanying her, it turned out that the jaw was dislocated moments after a simple yawn.

"She yawned and we suddenly heard a loud click, after which she was unable to close her mouth," her escorts told the medical team.

Joint weakness

A senior doctor at the otolaryngology unit was called to the emergency room and attempted to return the reluctant jaw to its place. Simultaneously, the woman received medicinal treatment to calm and relax her face muscles.

Physicians at the Nahariya hospital explained that the jaw was dislocated due to a weakness of the joint during the yawn.

The woman remained in the hospital for a follow-up and for now finds it difficult to talk due a plastic bandage meant to support her jaw. Doctors estimated that she would be released from hospital on Thursday and will continue to receive medicinal treatment.
