US: Campus for Jewish life gets funds

Taube-Koret Campus for Jewish Life raises USD 85 million of its targeted USD 150 million; community center construction could begin in 2007

Palo Alto, Ca - The Taube-Koret Campus for Jewish Life announced Thursday it has been awarded a USD 10 million grant from the Jewish Endowment Fund of San Francisco, the Peninsula, Marin and Sonoma counties, local media reported. The Campus for Jewish Life has now raised UISD 85 million of its targeted USD 150 million.

Palo Alto Online reported that the money will be used to purchase the former Ford Aerospace/Sun Microsystems site off Charleston Road in south Palo Alto and to build a Jewish community center on the 8.5 acres of land.

According to San Jose Mercury News, the campus would include a community center with two swimming pools, a playing field, meeting rooms, a cultural hall, a café and a preschool, as well as 193 units of affordable housing and enough parking for 600 vehicles.

"It's going to be a great facility for the city,'' said Judith Wasserman, a member of Palo Alto's Architectural Review Board, which gave the project the green light in May. In an interview with Mercury News, she added that "the buildings are definitely modern, and they're quite handsome.''

Construction on the center could begin as early as spring 2007, and is expected to last two years.

A draft environmental impact report for the project was completed in February 2006. The proposed campus will be reviewed by the Palo Alto Planning and Transportation Commission throughout June.

'Strengthen, enhance Jewish community life'

The Taube-Koret Campus for Jewish Life (TKCJL) is a collaborative initiative founded in 2001 by the Albert L. Schultz Jewish Community Center in Palo Alto, the Jewish Home in San Francisco, the Jewish Community Federation and local community leaders.

TKCJL's purpose is to strengthen and enhance Jewish community life on the South Peninsula by supporting development of a multi-purpose, intergenerational Jewish campus in Palo Alto.

When completed, it will become the permanent home for a new Jewish Community Center, a home for the elderly developed by the Jewish Home, regional headquarters for the Jewish Community Federation, and offices for other non-profit organizations serving the Jewish community.
