UJC raises USD 11.5 million for Israeli home front
Jewish organization to transfer money for summer camps for northern children, assisting the elderly and disabled and providing activities for northern children staying with their parents in central Israel
United Jewish Communities – Jewish Federations of North America (UJC) said in a statement that it will transfer USD 11.5 million for funding Israeli home front activities for the next 3-4 weeks.
The statement said the following activities will be financed by the lately established UJC Crisis Fund:
- USD 2 million per week for summer camps operated by the Jewish Agency for northern children.
- USD 1 million for assisting the elderly and the disabled, and for providing activities for northern children staying with their parents in central Israel. These activities are conducted by the American Joint Distribution Committee (JDC).
'Jewish communities in N. America mobilizing for Israel'
The total of funds allocated for the upcoming 3-4 weeks is slated to be USD 10 million.
The statement said that on top of the special Crisis Fund, UJC jointly with Jewish congregations throughout North America has succeeded in raising a sum of USD 1.5 million over the past weekend. This sum is intended for equipping public bomb-shelters in the north with air-conditioners, TV sets and lighting. This activity is coordinated with the Home Front Command and executed by the Jewish Agency.
UJC represents 155 Federations and 400 Communities throughout the United States and Canada. The organization offers assistance in immigrant integration, welfare and education, and is the chief contributor of funds for Jewish Agency and JDC activities.
Nachman Shai, senior VP and Director General of UJC, said, “The Jewish communities in North America are mobilizing for Israel at an ever-growing rate.”
