Gibson linked to anti-Jewish group

Member of Australian League of Rights says Holywood superstar attended anti-Jewish group's event

A newsletter for the Australian League of Rights (ALR), a Christian group notorious for denying the Holocaust ever happened, claims the 'Passion of Christ' director, Mel Gibson, once attended one of their annual dinners.

In the June 2004 edition of the group's newsletter, 'On Target', contributor Phil Butler writes that he attended an annual dinner in the town of Beechworth, Australia, at which Gibson, who last month launched into a drunken anti-Semitic tirade after being stopped by police for speeding, was present.

Butler writes: "So successful was the last dinner that I attended - who should attend, and cause the sensation of the evening? Both Mel Gibson and his father Hatton."

The ALR claim to promote "loyalty to the Christian concept of God" but many believe that the organization's values promote ant-Semitic views.

Gibson's spokesman Alan Nierob has denied the actor has any connection with the controversial group: "Mel has never heard of the ALR nor does he have any affiliation with them."

During his arrest, Gibson was alleged to have said to the arresting officer: "The Jews are responsible for all the wars in the world."
