Halperin was chosen by the Sonics in their previous draft during the second round, in the 53rd place. Despite an unconvincing display during the summer's league in Salt Lake City, SuperSonics General Manager Rick Sund and the members of his professional crew decided to give a shot to the 22-year-old (1.93 meters) player who was recently drafted to the Israeli national team.

It is still not clear whether the contract is a sure deal. It appears that Halperin is not yet sure about the contract and is still not clear on all aspects.
"We knew it would happen, it's not surprising, they're obligated to offer a contract," said an associate of Halperin. "It appears that at least for Yotam it is an assured contract, but he has to decide whether to take it or not. It's rather exciting. It's not every day that we get a chance to play for the NBA. Now it's in Yotam's hands."
