Torah teacher: 'King David was horny'

Torah teacher in Eilat high school tells students during lecture about story of King David and Bat Sheva: 'King David was horny'; matter causes controversy, teacher is almost dismissed

During a Torah class in the Goldwater High School in Eilat, the teacher told the grade 11 students that “King David was horny.” This event caused a stir in the school and almost led to the teacher’s dismissal.

The statement that caused this controversy was said during a Torah class that took place a few days ago in the school, on the issue of King David and Uriah the Hittite, who David sent to the battlefield to die so that he could marry Uriah’s wife Bat Sheva, who was pregnant from the king.

The students were rather amused by the teacher’s words, and some of them told Ynet that “the teacher was cool when she said that, she basically said what we were all thinking.”

But the statement did not stay between the teacher and her students. Some of the parents who heard of the comment addressed the school’s principal in a plea to dismiss the teacher.

“It is not a matter of that one word that the teacher used,” said one of the parents.

“It is the matter in which it is being conveyed to the students. The teachers themselves who are meant to educate you are also using bad words. It goes without saying that if we allow such language then why not allow colloquialisms and slang here and there? We have a beautiful language and the teachers should preserve their integrity and educate appropriately. This story is more than just about David’s sexual desires, and that’s the message that the students need to learn, and not such statements.”

'Oldest job in the world mentioned in Torah'

The teacher expressed her regret for anyone who was offended and claimed that she was mistaken in using such language. The students, on the other hand, did not understand what all the commotion was about.

“All she said was ‘horny.’ A wide variety of stories in the Torah are related to horniness, or as teachers would put it - sexual intercourse. Even the oldest job in the world is mentioned in the Torah,” said one of the students.

Spokesperson of the Education Ministry’s southern district Yifat Lipner responded: “We received the complaint against the teacher who expressed herself in an unrestricted way during her lecture. The principal of the school spoke with the teacher and explained to her the seriousness of the matter. The teacher expressed her regret to anyone who was offended and we believe the event will not happen again.”
