Terror attack at Karni crossing foiled

Majed Kambez, member of Popular Resistance Committees, involved in directing terror attack at Karni crossing last year, in which six Israelis were killed. Following his arrest, he reveals in his investigation plan to carry out another attack at crossing through explosive tunnel

An explosive tunnel dug in order to carry out a terror attack at the Karni crossing was uncovered at the end of August following the arrest of a Popular Resistance Committees military activist by the Israel Defense Forces and the Shin Bet.

On Thursday afternoon it was cleared for publication that Majed Fahmi Salameh Kambez, 29, was arrested on August 14 and provided information during his investigation, which led to uncovering the tunnel.

During the interrogation of Kambez, a resident of the Sajaiya neighborhood in Gaza, it was revealed that the terror organization's plan was to place powerful explosive devices inside the tunnel after digging it, under an administration building used by the IDF to manage the crossing.

In a joint operation launched by the Shin Bet and the Southern Command, a 13-meter (42.64-feet) long pit and a tunnel about 150 meters (492 feet) long were uncovered near the Karni crossing.

In addition, Kambez told the investigators that he was involved in directing the terror attack carried out by the PRC, Hamas and the al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades at the Karni crossing on January 13, in which six Israelis were killed.

A senior PRC member, Mamtaz Degmash, stood on the roof of Kambez's house and maintained contact with one of the suicide bombers until he detonated himself.

Involved in Musa Arafat's murder

Kambez's involvement in planning and executing terror attacks at the Karni crossing joins previous attacks carried out in the area by terror organizations, taking advantage of the fact that the crossing is used to bring in food, goods, medications and other equipment to the Palestinian population.

Following many warnings on terror organizations' plans to carry out attacks at the crossing, it was closed occasionally during the past months.

During his interrogation, Majed Kambez also confessed that he was involved in the murder of the Musa Arafat, the Palestinian Authority's military intelligence chief. He was part of the group that broke into Arafat's home and was present at the place at the time of the murder.

His activity included military exercises at training camps, transferring weapons to activists, firing antitank missiles at IDF soldiers and involvement in recruiting terrorists for terror attacks.
