Rise in ready-made sukkah sales

Manufacturers Association of Israel says that some 25,000 ready-made sukkahs sold ahead of holiday for estimated NIS 16-18 million

A 20 percent rise has been reported in the 2006 sales of ready-made sukkahs in comparison with last year’s figures.

The Manufacturers Association of Israel said that some 25,000 ready-made sukkahs have been sold for an estimated NIS 16-18 million (USD 3.7-4.2 million) ahead of the holiday.

According to the Sukkat Nehalim company, the price for a ready-made 2X2 meter sukkah starts at NIS 740 (USD 175), similar to last year’s price.

Sukkah manufacturers said the across-the board rise in sales is seen in both the secular and religious sectors.

“The sukkahs are compact, easy to assemble and store and can last for as many as 10 years,” one manufacturer said.

Marom F.G.P. Ltd. CEO Avi Marom said the number of orders for sukkah decorations and flags has risen by 17 percent from 2005, with sales reaching NIS 5.3 million (USD 1.25 million). According to him, the company received special orders from Nepal and India for sukkah cloth and decorations.

2006 has also seen a 25 percent rise in the sale of branches and fronds used to cover the sukkah, with manufacturers reporting sales of 65,000 sukkah-covering kits for an estimated NIS 1.5 million (USD 350,000).

The price of a sukkah-covering kit ranges from NIS 25-36 per meter (USD 6-8).

Manufacturers said they expect a 3 percent rise in Simchat Torah flags this holiday; some 400,000 flags will be sold for an estimated NIS 4.3 million (USD 1 million). The price of a plastic flag ranges from NIS 7-10 (USD 1.65-2.35).
