Nablus: IDF thwarts attack on security forces

IDF forces in West Bank kill Palestinian, thwart planned attack on security forces in area

IDF forces, operating in the Balata refugee camp in the West Bank city of Nablus Thursday night, killed a young Palestinian and wounded another. IDF sources said that the Palestinian activists were planning an attack against security forces. A car bomb found on the scene was blown up by sappers.

Palestinian sources in Nablus reported Ibrahim Sanakreh, the younger brother of Ala Sanakreh of the al-Aqsa Martyrs' Brigades, was killed by IDF fire Thursday night. Palestinians claimed that another brother of Sanakreh’s and a number of Palestinian activists were injured in the shooting.

IDF sources said that during a paratrooper operation in the camp, a Palestinian was seen engaged in suspicious activity. The forces opened fire at the suspect and hit him. A short time later, troops noticed another Palestinian holding wires, and again opened fire and hit him.

An inspection of the area revealed that the two Palestinians were involved in preparing a car bomb. Sappers were called to the scene and blew up the car bomb. The IDF estimated that the car was intended to hit security forces operating in the area.

IDF forces continued their operation against the Qassam rocket-launching infrastructure in Beit Hanoun in the Gaza Strip. IDF soldiers had a mosque in the town under siege and exchanged fire throughout the night with about 60 Palestinian gunmen holed up inside the mosque.

Palestinian sources reported that gunmen were shooting out of windows in the mosque and that IDF soldiers threw grenades and tear gas into the building.

Sources in Beit Hanoun said that IDF bulldozers arrived at the scene and demolished one of the mosques walls in an attempt to force the gunmen to leave thte building and surrender.

In other operations, Palestinian sources reported four Hamas activists killed in an IDF missile attack in the west of Gaza. The sources also said that IDF sources operating in the area continued to fight gunmen from all the organizations.

Palestinian sources said the four were members of Hamas's armed wing and included a senior local commander. The IDF has yet to confirm these reports.
