Gay parade gets go ahead

J’lem Police, gay rights group agree to hold parade on Friday as scheduled; only obstacle – High Court hearing

Following a meeting Tuesday between Jerusalem Police officials and representatives of the Open House gay rights group it was decided that the Gay Pride Parade will take place this coming Friday, as scheduled.

The parade is set to begin at 11 a.m. and conclude at around 3 p.m.; participants will march from Kaplan Street and head toward the Givat Ram Stadium, where a rally will be held.

The only obstacle remaining pertains to the High Court hearing on the appeals submitted to prevent the parade from taking place.

On Tuesday Shas Chairman and Deputy Prime Minister Eli Yishai filed his own petition against the parade.

'There is no compromise'

The minister told Ynet, "I personally filed a petition as a citizen in a bid to prevent the abomination parade in the city's streets.

"Why didn’t those people try and hold the parade in Mecca or at the Vatican? This is an explosive belt which could shake the entire Middle East."

According to Yishai, "there is no compromise. It must not take place in the State of Israel, certainly not in Jerusalem, but also not in Tel Aviv.

"I hope that at the last minute the court will not ignore the public danger and will instruct to remove this black affliction hovering above all of us, and this day will not be marked eternally in disgrace," he said.

Meanwhile, some 700 students of the Netiv Meir yeshiva held prayers against the upcoming gay pride parade near Mount Herzl in the city.

Police said no violent incidents were registered during the gathering.
