Captive's wife: Nasrallah's wife would understand me

Families of kidnapped soldiers leave for Brussels to urge legislators to push for implementation of UN Resolution 1701, which calls for the release of kidnapped soldiers Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev from Hizbullah's captivity

Karnit Goldwasser, the wife of Ehud Goldwasser, the Israeli soldier who was kidnapped by Hizbullah on July 12, made an appeal to the wife of Hizbullah leader Hassan Nasrallah urging her to convince her husband to give Israel a sign of life from her kidnapped husband.

"I want to turn to the wife of Hassan Nasrallah and to the wives of Hizbullah people, because they will surely understand me. They will understand the distress of the kidnapped soldiers' families who for four and a half month have had no sign of life," Goldwasser said on Tuesday at Ben-Gurion airport shortly before leaving for Belgium to campaign for her husband's release.

Goldwasser will attend a rally organized by Jewish communities to protest the lack of information on the fate of Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, the Israeli soldiers kidnapped on July 12 by Hizbullah.

The Regev and Goldwasser families were joined by Noam Shalit, father of Gilad Shalit who was kidnapped by Palestinian gunmen on June 25 in a cross-border raid near Gaza.

Amir Avni, Karnit Goldwasser's father, said the rally will be staged outside the European Parliament building in Brussels because the European Union holds significant sway over Lebanese affairs.

"Europe was the one who pressed for a ceasefire and for Resolution 1701 of the United Nations Security Council. Therefore it has to take responsibility for the implementation of the resolution which calls for the release of the kidnapped soldiers," he said.

'Seeking help from pope'

Avni said the families made unsuccessful contacts with Muslim bodies seeking information on the fate of their sons.

"We passed on messages to them through mediators, we sent letters by our sons' mothers, but until now this has been a unilateral path," he said.

He added that the families will join Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni on a meeting of European foreign ministers next week. The families also plan to enlist the Vatican for their cause.

"We plan to seek help from above, starting with pope to every Christian in order to return our sons," he said.

Karnit spoke of her distress to Ynet: "I return to an empty house every night. I wake up in the morning and no one tells me good morning. When I look at Ehud's toothbrush I ask myself, is it waiting for him or not. I see his clothes and ask the same question. The lack of information on my husband is very difficult."

Noam Shalit welcomed the ceasefire between Israel and Palestinian armed groups in Gaza, saying the move "gives hope that things are returning to normality and maybe in the end a new channel of talks will open up."
