Pines declares: I'm running for Labor leadership

Knesset member announces his candidacy at Tel Aviv press conference, says party has lost its way and that he wishes to rebuild it. 'Peace is the only guarantee for Israel's security,' Pines states

Another candidate for Labor leadership: Knesset Member Ophir Pines officially announced Tuesday at a press conference in Tel Aviv he will be running for the Labor Party leadership.

"I'm running in order to win and to build a new party. I want the Labor members to be proud to support their party, not ashamed," he stated.

Pines slammed current party Chairman Amir Peretz, and said, "He didn't show leadership, and I want to represent worthy leadership."

Pines explained that what motivated him to run for the position was his sense that the party was facing a crisis.

"I want to build a new party, a party with principles and values, a party that speaks the truth. A party that stands by its promises, without double standards. A party that the public can trust will lead Israel to accomplishments," he said.

Speaking about his vision for the future, Pines said, "Peace is the only guarantee for Israel's security… These values have become values we have forsaken, values we stopped talking about. We can't be part of a government that refuses peace."
