Nadav Haber
The Nadav Haber Project
In honor of the Tel Aviv Jazz Festival, which opens this week, listen to Nadav Haber and his group, who combine Ethiopian music with jazz sounds in a completely new way
Saxophone player Pharaoh Sanders unfortunately is not coming to the Tel Aviv Jazz Festival, but there are plenty of other good things. One of the most interesting shows in the festival, which opens this Tuesday in the Tel Aviv Cinematheque, is the Nadav Haber Quartet performance.
Saxophone player Haber, who has been playing jazz music for many years, discovered Ethiopian music in the nineties, and has been incorporating it in his jazz since then. Here you can listen to the quartet’s rendition of “Merkato - Different Tastes”. The Nadav Haber Quartet recently released an album titled Addis Mist, which combines the various music styles.
Haber discovered Ethiopian music while studying at the Hebrew University. Following his musical journey, Haber visited Ethiopia and performed there several times. “It was an obvious connection,” he says, “I have been playing Ethiopian and jazz music for many years before I decided to combine the two. It was an amazing experience to perform in Ethiopia. The audience there obviously knows Ethiopian music, but is always looking for new things.”
Haber’s stylized quartet includes Zohar Kahila (piano), Yehuda Ashash (bass, oud) and Tzvika Rosenblatt (drums). In this performance, guest performers will be singer Avach Drera and saxophone player Abatte Berihon.
The festival, which will be held at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque, will include many other groups and artists, among them: The Judy Wexler Quintet (USA-Israel), pianist Stefano Bollani (Italy), The Fernando Knopf sextet, the Tel Aviv Jazz Band, Daniel Zamir and Omri Mor, The Matt Renzi trio, the Julia Feldman jazz quartet and many others.
