Make settlers decide

Israel should pull out of Hebron, let settlers decide where they wish to live

Every time the people who refer to themselves as the "Jewish community in Hebron" perform one of their buying-selling- trespassing shows, we can again take pleasure in the grand hypocrisy skills they were blessed with.

 

The show always begins with that same miserable wail being hurled in all directions with wide open eyes: "What happened? What's the issue? A Jew bought a house, that's it. Isn't a Jew allowed to buy a house? Only the Arabs are allowed to buy a house? You want to have 'Judenrein' here'?"

 

And then, usually when a journalist sympathetic to them approaches, the Jewish moan disappears at once, and in its place appears a decisive operational order belonging to a commando unit: "This house dominates the settlers' route. It's important for controlling the road artery. Taking over it is in line with the separation plan, reinforces our hold, deepens our control…"

 

Those are not exactly the common explanations provided by an honest person who purchases a house. Such person would probably say that he liked the house, that the neighborhood is nice, the neighbors are friendly, the location was just right, and the price was reasonable. He would not explain with sparkling eyes that he purchased a half-built home at a grotesque price just in order to "reinforce his control of the road artery…"

 

Yet when, God forbid, terrorism hits, as terror tends to hit under such circumstances, the commando unit proud of its conquests disappears at once, and the miserable Jew again reappears, wailing with seemingly innocent eyes: "Why kill innocent Jews? What did we do? We merely bought a house so that Jews have where to live. These Arabs are Nazis! They should be expelled and their property should be given to the poor Jews, who just want to buy a house and live there quietly with their children."

 

Learn to behave like human beings

And so, before the camera, the settlers disprove their own lies, and the truth emerges: Those are not "innocent Jews" seeking to purchase an apartment, but rather, as they admit, they are the arm and fist and nails of a violent and fundamentalist occupation power that is enlisted for a clear and defined mission: To oppress, abuse, disinherit, expel, and plunder. And it makes no difference at all whether they do this in order to fill their pockets or to worship their idols.

 

And therefore, the question isn't at all whether the purchase itself is kosher or tainted. If it's kosher – the buyers should live there. If it's tainted – may they be evicted soon. The only relevant question is this: When will the State of Israel finally realize that for the sake of its mental health and physical security, it would be better to quickly free itself from the curse of controlling Hebron and all of its residents. Regardless of religion, ethnicity, or gender.

 

That way, the Hebron settlers can purchase as much as they want, sell as much as they want, and dance under the moon as much as they want. Ultimately they will have to decide whether they wish to pack their hallucinations and return to the State of Israel or stay there, in Palestine, may it come upon us for good, and learn to behave like human beings.
