Israeli flowers conquer Europe ahead of Easter
Flower growers rejoice as demands skyrocket due to overlap of Jewish and Christian holidays this year
Israeli flower growers are rejoicing, as Passover and Easter overlap this year and the demand for flowers is skyrocketing.
"The fact that the two holidays occur simultaneously has enabled the growers to receive high prices for the flowers," explained Avraham Daniel, secretary-general of the Flower Growers Association.
According to Daniel, a rise of about 10 percent has been registered these days in the prices of flowers in the Dutch flower markets.
The most wanted flowers are roses, gerberas, gypsophilas, white lilies, lisiantus and hypericum.
The Flower Growers Association and the Aviv Corporation have concluded the winter season with a rise of more than 10 percent in proceeds compared to last winter.
In 2006, approximately 47 million flowers were exported from Israel and proceeds were estimated at 7 million euro, while in 2007 approximately 55 million flowers were exported and proceeds were estimated at 9 million euro.
"In spite of the extreme weather changes, the growers accustomed themselves and the result is particularly high exports," association officials said.
