Winograd interim report to be released Monday
Report addresses time from 2000 withdrawal from Lebanon to abduction of IDF soldiers, decision to go to war. Commission's protocols to be published two weeks later
The Winograd Commission investigating the failures of the Second Lebanon War will file an interim report to Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Amir Peretz on Monday at 4pm, the commission's spokesman reported on Wednesday.
An hour later, the commission's chairman, retired judge Eliyahu Winograd, will hold a press conference in which the report's main points will be detailed.
The interim report addresses the period starting from the Israel Defense Forces' withdrawal from Lebanon in 2000 up until the kidnapping of soldiers Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser on July 12, 2006, and the time in which the decision to go to war was made, between July 12 and July 17.
The commission is scheduled to publish the testimonies of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Defense Minister Amir Peretz and former IDF chief of staff Dan Halutz two weeks after the interim report is released.
So far, the testimonies of Vice Premier Shimon Peres and other military officials have been made public.
The decision to make the protocols public came after a long battle between MK Zahava Gal-On, who petitioned the High Court of Justice for their publication, and the commission members, who claimed that filtering and censoring the material would take time.
Gal-On argued that "the publication of the protocols before the conclusions is vital to fulfilling the commission's main purpose – getting to the truth."
