UN chief calls on Hizbullah to show sign of life from kidnapped IDF soldiers

In Security Council report on implementation of Resolution 1701, Ban Ki-moon says Hizbullah’s position contradicts ‘basic humanitarian values’

United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon has called on Hizbullah to present evidence that kidnapped IDF soldiers Eldad Regev and Ehud Goldwasser are still alive.

“Unfortunately, the situation is aggravated by Hizbullah's persistent refusal to provide a proof of life. Worries about the fate of the two soldiers are therefore increasing,” Ban wrote in the Security Council’s quarterly report on the implementation of Resolution 1701, which brought last summer’s war in Lebanon to a close.

“I share deeply the anxiety of the families and call again on Hizbullah to reconsider this posture, which contradicts basic humanitarian values," he wrote in the report issued last Friday.

However, Ban said that despite the difficulties both sides have asked the UN to continue its mediation efforts.

In the report the secretary-general also called on Syria and Iran to respect an arms embargo on militias in Lebanon and urged Damascus to better control its border with its neighbor.
