Prosecutors request extension in responding to petitions against Katsav

State Prosecutor's Office asks High Court for 48-hour continuance in submitting response to petitions calling for annulment of former president’s plea bargain

The State Prosecutor's Office requested on Monday a 48-hour continuance in submitting a response to petitions calling for the annulment of former President Moshe Katsav's plea bargain.

The Prosecutor's Office told the High Court it would not file a corrected indictment until the petitions were heard. Attorneys for Katsav have also requested a continuance.

The High Court issued an injunction on Sunday deferring State plans to indict Katsav in a Jerusalem court in the framework of a plea bargain on sex charges.

Justice Jubran ruled it was inappropriate that the State pushed for a plea bargain deal before the High Court had ruled on a handful of petitions by civil rights and women's groups who wanted Katsav to stand trial.

Meanwhile, the Knesset's Finance Committee announced Sunday that it would hold a meeting this week to discuss revoking Katsav’s financial benefits, after the committee's legal counsel decided that the committee had to authority to do so.

The committee will discuss revoking such privileges as state-sponsored office and assistants for the former president, as well as a car and a chauffeur for the remainder of his life. The committee does not plan to harm Katsav's pension rights.
