IDF petitions High Court over Winograd report

Chief military defense council petitions High Court asking that it order Winograd Commission to issue warning letters. Commission states subpoenas, partial report annul need for official letters

Chief Military Defense Council Colonel Orna David filed a petition with the High Court Wednesday demanding that it order the Winograd Commission, which is investigating the Second Lebanon War, to send out warning letters should its report include personal recommendations for any of those involved.

Former Defense Minister Amir Peretz sent the Winograd Commission a letter asking to appear before the panel again before any decisions regarding him are made.

The IDF's petition followed correspondence between David and Justice Eliyahu Winograd, in which David tried, to no avail, to get a clear answers regarding the commission's intent regarding the warning letters.

The commission had stated in the past that its partial report can be considered as due warning to those concerned, making sending warning letters unnecessary.

Sources close to Winograd told Ynet that the commission may hold its subpoenas as warning letters unto themselves.

The subpoenas' wording, said the source, entailed all the information that would have been specified in the warning letters, such as name, rank and position of the person in questions, along with all claims, questions and inquiries regarding them.
