An Israeli non-profit to advise UN body

Shatil, the New Israel Fund’s empowerment and training center, will serve as a special advisor to the United Nation's Economic and Social Council (ECOSOC)

ECOSOC, the forum for the promotion of international social and economic issues, has invited the Israeli Shatil organization to serve as a special advisor. Shatil - the New Israel Fund’s empowerment and training center - provides consulting and training services to over 1,000 Israeli non-profit organizations, will now cooperate with the council along with 3,000 other international organizations.

Since the foundation of Shatil in 1982, it has focused its efforts on promoting civil society in Israel. The organization's work includes assisting social-change organizations that promote social and economic justice, human rights, religious and cultural pluralism, the civil rights of Arab Israelis and more.

In 2005 Shatil was awarded a special status by the United Nations Department of Public Information (UNDPI). Rachel Liel, Shatil's director, said that "as an organization that deals with the social-economic agenda, it is a great honor to serve as a special advisor to the council." Liel stressed that the title enables non governmental organizations to contribute to the realization of the UN's goals.
