Ninet headed to Chicago

Israeli pop star invited to perform at tribute for her idol, the late Jeff Buckley

Israeli singer Ninet Tayeb can start fantasizing about an international career, as she has been invited to appear in two tribute shows for the late Jeff Buckley, who died ten years ago.

The shows will be held in Chicago on the Saturday the17th and Sunday the18th of November. Ninet was also invited to perform on the 16th, but refused so as not to desecrate Shabbat.

Singers and performers from around the world will be paying tribute to the American star who drowned in 1997 at the age of 31, in a three-night event in which his songs will be recreated.

Jeff Buckley, to be honored in Chicago

The show on the November 18 will be held at the Chicago Metro and is expected to be attended by key figures from the American music industry.

Ninet will be performing three of Buckley's songs, that have not been chosen yet, with American guitarists Gary Lucas, who composed some of the singer's songs. One of the songs may even be translated and sung in Hebrew.

"This is a great dream of mine that I have had for some time," Ninet said, "To be honest, I didn't believe it would come so quickly, or at all. For me to sing Buckley's songs on two evenings that mark ten years for his death is one big 'wow'. Something amazing that I can't even perceive, it's unbelievable."

When were you first introduced to Buckley?

"The first time was in the army. One day I came across an album of his live performance and just fell that instant. Since then the disc has almost never left my stereo system. I think he is one of the most enriching artists in the music business, at least for me. He really influenced me, in every way, in the way I perceive music, my writing, the way I think and the way I conduct myself in life."

Are you preparing yourself for the possibility of arousing the interest of international bodies?

"The possibility of progress abroad is always at the back of your mind, but it's not really in the works yet. At the moment it's not too essential for me and doesn't occupy me at all. I am just happy to get the opportunity to sing Buckley's songs, in his honor, and I am sure that he will be hearing them from up above. It will be very exciting."
