From a white wedding to a divorce court

An eternity that lasts two years: 17% of couples that divorced in Israel in 2006 were married less than three years

When couples say their wedding vows they promise each other everlasting love. Yet, five out every 100 couples' love only lasts a year.

Data gathered from the country's Rabbinical Courts shows that 10,000 couples filed for divorce in Israel in 2006 – a 4% increase compared to the previous year. Tel Aviv is in the lead with 723 cases, though Jerusalem is showing a surprising 10.4% increase in divorces.

So, how long does it take to decide a marriage isn't working? One of the most interesting findings reveals that about 17% of the total number of divorces in 2006, were filed less than three years after the knot was tied.

If you survived six years in matrimony bliss, your risk of divorce drops. But, pay attention; your 20th anniversary might be your last: 17.5% of couples decided to go their separate ways after 20-30 years together.

The couple, who set the Israeli fastest-divorce-ever record, arrived at the Rabbinical Court less than a week after the wedding: four days to be exact. The husband argued his wife refused to live in his parents' house while his bride claimed her husband promised her they will rent an apartment and live on their own.

The newlyweds also had some financial disputes: According to the wife, the husband's family gave cheap gifts and therefore, her share of the wedding gifts should be larger.

The rabbis, who failed to convince the couple to reconsider, granted the wife her wish and gave both the divorce papers.
