Football: Big Blue Jerusalem trounces Mike's Place Tel Aviv

48-6 win keeps Jerusalem alone at the top of Fieldturf Israel Football League standings

Big Blue Jerusalem used big plays to overwhelm Mike’s Place Tel Aviv Sabers 48-6 in a Fieldturf Israel Football League game on Saturday night, December 1, at Kiryat Shalom.

The win kept Jerusalem’s record perfect at 2-0, alone at the top of the standings, while Tel Aviv remains at the bottom of the four-team league - Israel's first fully-equipped tackle football league - as the only club without a victory.

Yoni Lehrer started the scoring binge with a 40-yard touchdown reception thrown by quarterback Aryeh Bauman. A Tomer Shacham interception gave the ball back to Big Blue. A short pass to Moshe Horowitz was taken down the sideline for 75 yards and a score, the longest play of the season so far.

Big Blue extended its lead to 16-0 when a Tel Aviv ball-carrier was tackled in his own end zone for a safety. Bauman’s two-yard scamper made the score 22-0.

Mike’s Place finally put six points on the board before halftime, but an interception ran back for 60 yards by Adam Lemberg gave Jerusalem a decisive28-6 lead.

Adam's older brother, Ben Lemberg, fell on a fumble in the end zone to stretch the Big Blue lead to 36-6. Big Blue backup QB Uri Shiff hooked up with Lehrer on a 44-yard scoring strike, his second of the day, as Big Blue made it 42-6.

The final score for Big Blue was on a running play by Ariel Back.

This was the first time that the new Fieldturf IFL held a game in Tel Aviv.

Some 100 spectators were on hand at Maccabi Tel Aviv soccer club's training facility.

The next Fieldturf IFL game will be held next Saturday night, December 8, when Big Blue Jerusalem (2-0) hosts Real Housing Haifa (1-1). Kickoff at Kraft Family Stadium will be at 7:30 pm. The league has dubbed the game “The Hanukkah Bowl,” and candles will be lit before the opening kickoff.
