Shades of Ray Charles
David ‘Fathead’ Newman, saxophonist in Ray Charles’ original band, to take part in Tel-Aviv Jazz Festival. Marina from Kochav Nolad, Shlomi Shaban also to attend
Original sax player for the band formed by the late, great Ray Charles, David ‘Fathead’ Newman, will honor the late musician with a tribute to his music at the 2008 Tel-Aviv Jazz Festival, to be held on the 20th of February at the Tel-Aviv Cinematheque.
Performing along with Newman will be talented veteran pianist Kirk Lightsey, who played with other Jazz legends such as Chet Baker, Kenny Burrell, Benny Golson, as well as many others.
The Jazz festival will also boast its share of other overseas talent including the Odean Pope Saxophone Choir, the Mario Pavone Trio, and Kahil el Zabar.
While Israel does have its fair share of Jazz artists, the local talent featured at the festival will be more of the mainstream variety, including Marina Maximilian Blumin of Kochav Nolad (Israeli version of American Idol) who will sing accompanied by the Tel-Aviv Jazz Big Band, and musician Amikam Kimelman who is the Executive Director of the Rimon School of Jazz and Contemporary Music.
Another renowned Israeli artist taking part in the Jazz festival who will hold one of the chief performances, is Shlomi Shaban, who will perform his own take on various Israeli and international musical compositions.
The Albert Beger Quartet, Avi Adrian Jazz Trio, Yotam Silberstein Quartet, Ella Tadmor, and Yair Slutzki on trombone will also perform at the Jazz Festival. Tickets will coast between NIS 80-160 each ($20-$40).
