Polish PM: We've always supported Israel

'There are joint actions we can take in the fields of security and global order,' Tusk tells reporters following Jerusalem meeting with Olmert, adds that his government working to return goods confiscated during World War II to rightful owners

"It is time that both Poland and Israel make the distinction between a true ally and one who offers temporary gestures," Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk said following his meeting with his Israeli counterpart Ehud Olmert in Jerusalem Wednesday.

"Over the past few decades, regardless of our dire situation, the Polish people have always supported Israel," he said.

During a joint press conference with the Israeli PM, Tusk said "Poland and Israel hold similar positions regarding the global threats, and there are joint actions we can take in the fields of security and global order.

"Poland will demonstrate determination and sensitivity regarding the war on terror, and also with regards to the arrogance of certain powers," Tusk said in reference to Iran and its president, Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

Poland "has no doubt that Iran's words towards Israel cancels its right to a place in the international community," he said.

"If there are exceptions in Europe with regard to the Iran issue, it is definitely not Poland."

During the press conference the leaders also addressed the possibility of returning goods that had been confiscated during World War II to their rightful owners. Tusk said the matter was being advanced by his government and the parliament in Warsaw, but said his country's resources were limited, thus suggesting that those who are claiming ownership of the goods, including many Jews, should not get their hopes up.

Olmert praised the Polish leader for his government's efforts in this matter.
